My Artistic Inspiration

B.J. Aspen.

Everything that we say and do as human beings is simply an extension of what lies inside of us. I've come to realize that my art is an atempt to explore the world through the prism of the black american experience, keeping in mind that one can never speak collectively for all members off a community, and that, at the end of the day, my art is simply a tool that creates a dialogue by which I can express and share my view of the world.

I believe that one can not have any real success in life, unless one has a true sense of identity, and a sufficient level of self love. To this end, I've come to recognize, and question the global effect that europeanism and colonialism has had on the psyche and self image of people of color throughout history. Europe's willingness to disseminate its culture around the world by means of religion, colonialism and or war has facilitated it's western views and philosophy. In the early part of the 20th century, the American and European community was the first to recognize the potential of the mass media. With the invention of radio, television and movies, America and Europe's ability to disseminate western philosophy globally, grew exponentially. Anytime that one can control what the masses see and hear, then one has a very powerful tool indeed. In the end, what the very powerful in media want.. is control.

With regard to the black community in America, I believe that, for far to long, with few exceptions, it has been conditioned to see itself through the prism (eyes) of Europe. I count myself among that number, I am painfully aware that I view the world (in a general sense) through the lens that Europe has painted for me. Most peoples of the earth have at sometime in history been subject to colonialism and been forced to see themselves through the prism of the oppressors, in that sense, the African American is no exception. I know that many would not agree with my conspiracy theory, particularly those of European descent, nonetheless I hold to this view until a greater power shows me otherwise. I would like to also mention that, I do not hate Europeans......I hate europeanism.

As the philosopher, once said..."The most effective tool in hands of the oppressors, Are the minds of the oppressed".
